Knox County activists leave strong, lasting legacy
As protector of agricultural lands, Johnson was elected to the board dominated by men as Knox County Democrat, after going door to door in his district during the height of the controversial strip-mining in the County of Knox in 1974. Johnson also was honored to join President Jimmy Carter as he signed the control surface mining and Reclamation Act of 1977. Winick for 22 years was editor of the Zephyr, "the first newspaper of public access," which was the recipient of dozens of awards, according to a news release for the summit. As a publisher, Winick received the Illinois Press Association Verle V.Kremmer trophy for the best newspaper in Division A in 2008. Like Johnson, Winick has been involved in politics as a Democrat in a traditionally Republican stronghold. Winick has been an active member in the birthplace of Carl Sandburg Association and Galesburg Exchange Club and was a board member of the West Central Illinois Legal Assistance. Serving on several boards of Galesburg, Winick was the recipient of the Commission on Human Relations in recognition of promoting racial and ethnic harmony within the community.Walnut Grove Farm, where the summit will be held activist, is owned by the king, who was a good friend of Johnson and Winick. At the summit, participants will share how Winick and Johnson have influenced their lives, followed by a tour of Knox Prairie station, sharing and discussion of FACT (feed Concerns Trust), the promotion of strong and healthy man.Knox County Illinois Humaine Society - News

Johnson was a founding member of Spoon River Watershed Project, Citizens for the Preservation of Knox County and Prairie Woods Environmental Coalition and was active in the Citizens Coal Council, the Sierra Club and Galesburg Historical Society.
