Let the grizzly bear walk free
Officials are saying the bear acted normally -- she had three cubs with her when the attack occurred this past week -- and because of that she won't be terminated.
This is not to diminish the fact a human being, 57-year-old Brian Matayoshi of Torrance, Calif., lost his life. The bear was just being a bear, doing what bears do, and so I hope she gets away and raises her cubs to adulthood.
I also hope I would say the same thing if the person she killed was a member of my family, like one of my grandkids. I hope that's the case, but I don't know.
With absolute certainty I can say if this terrible thing happened to me, I wouldn't want anyone to harm the bear.
I've been in close quarters with brown bears in Alaska several times. They've walked right past my tent, even fed around it so closely during the night I could hear their snuffles as they gobbled up wild blueberries. In the mornings, the giant mounds of grizzly scat were just a few feet from where I'd been sleeping.
And at least one brown bear laid claim to a moose I killed. Fed off it, buried it, snuck back close to my camp and stole off with another hindquarter during the night. I say at least one bear did that because the morning I killed the moose, during a short period when the sun was actually out, I saw bears all around me. Six in all at one time, including a grandly furred sow and three nearly grown cubs.
I was alone out there on that trip, miles from anyone and stranded for days by high wind and low visibility, no food, putrid treated water and lots of bears. I did a little video for my family, just in case something did happen, because I just didn't know how it would end.
Obviously, I made it home, and my family got a big kick out of my pitifulness on video because I never erased that tape, as much as anything because I didn't want to lose that feeling of utter helplessness that came with being a tiny human organism in a wildness ruled by the most awesome animal in North America.
