Officers, firefighters enter ring to benefit colleague
Jayson Hoffman, Brenan Jackson and Lou Bender took up boxing just one month ago and got in the ring for the first time to help raise more than $3,500 to benefit one of their own Saturday night in the annual Guns & Hoses boxing event at Monroeville Convention Center.
"It is kind of crazy," said Hoffman, 23, of the Clairton Volunteer Fire Department. "I just learned boxing, and I'm going in the ring."
Still, he was optimistic facing an experienced boxer in Jose Loera, of Third Avenue Police Athletic League. He was anxious to get in the ring and try out his new skills.
"He's a real boxer," Hoffman said of Loera prior to their seventh-bout matchup.
They trained for their three consecutive, one-minute rounds and joined Pittsburgh police, firefighters and other amateur boxers to benefit James Kuzak Jr., the 39-year-old Clairton police officer shot five times when he responded to a home invasion in April.
Funds raised will go to the James Kuzak Benefit Fund, and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Give the Kids the World, a nonprofit organization that fulfills wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.
Hoffman lost, though he found the rigorous training, time and effort learning to box worth it.
"I was there that night," said Hoffman, who was on duty when Kuzak was shot. "I was asked to sign up for this, and I'm here for Jimmy. I like boxing. I like everything — the training, the bloody noses and fat lips. I've had two bloody noses and a fat lip. It's great."
The conditioning was grueling, and they learned to move around, spar and box during two-hour sessions, three evenings a week at retired police officer Jim Cvetic's Third Avenue gym.
"They asked if we were available to sign up for this," said Jackson, 23, of the Clairton Police Department. "I'm boxing because of Jimmy. Anything I can do to help."
Jackson faced Pete Hartzer of Wilkins Police Department in the 11th bout.
