Chain restaurants will make kids menus healthier

WASHINGTON (AP) - Parents looking for healthy meal in a restaurant for their children can begin to look beyond chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese.
At least 19 restaurant chains - including Burger King, Chili, and Friendly IHOP - said Wednesday they include healthier options on the menus of their children. At least 15 000 Restaurant Locations will focus on increasing servings of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low fat dairy. The articles will have less fat, sugars and sodium.
Less healthy foods such as burgers and fries are still on the menu, but the restaurants say they will do more to promote healthier options. Chile, for example, will highlight a chicken sandwich with a side of pineapple or mandarin oranges on the menu for their children. Burger King has recently reformulated chicken nuggets for kids so they understand less sodium, and employees to take command will ask if customers want healthier french fries instead of just the standard "fries with that?"
The effort is part of a new initiative of the National Restaurant Association to provide children with healthier options in restaurants and to make it easier for parents to find options. Some items are already on the menus, but restaurants do not advertise more visible and the flag of the healthier menu items to facilitate the order.
To join the program, restaurants must have at least one menu item for children that is 600 calories or less, and meet other nutritional needs. A side dish is less than 200 calories should also be included.
"This could provide a big boost to health offers restaurants," said Robert Post, the Agriculture Department official in charge of the development of dietary guidelines of the ministry, which was released earlier this year. They urged Americans to eat less salt.
"We expect this trend to new objects and reformulations voluntary", Washington Post.
